Human trafficking and slave labor has been an ongoing issue in Thailand’s fishing industry.  In a CNN interview, Chan-ocha (prime minister of Thailand) stated that his government was in the process of updating legislation to better deal with these issues.

Thai labor workers are promised decent wages only to find themselves among thousands of others, working as virtual slaves.  The main issue is that the global demand for seafood has increased, and with better jobs and wages available, work in the fishing industry seems less and less appealing.  With a growing demand for seafood, Thai officials may be purposely avoiding registration of some traffic victims.
