A South Korean student at New York University has been arrested for entering North Korea illegally from Dandong, China. Joo Won-moon, 21 years old, is a South Korean citizen and a U.S. permanent resident. Mr. Joo is under investigation and it is not certain if he will be sentenced for espionage.

Mr. Joo told the media in an interview with CNN that he had hope to mitigate tensions between the two countries. He said, “I thought that some great event could happen (by entering North Korea) and hope that event could have a good effect on the relations between the North and South (Korea).”

South Korea’s government has called North Korea demanding immediate release of Mr. Joo.
