A lion in a Chinese zoo was shot dead after killing a 65 year old keeper and escaping.  The keeper had been cleaning when the lion bit him on his shoulders and neck, dying from his injuries.  The lion was shot dead after being loose in the zoo for more than an hour.

It was not mentioned in the Chinese Media how the lion had escaped its enclosure.  Staff had put up steel barriers at the entrance.  Then visitors and staff were evacuated.  Local law enforcement had arrived quickly.

There are arguments regarding the living conditions of the animals at the zoo and animal abuse.  The China Zoo watch had conducted an undercover investigation last August and found abuse of tigers as well as finding them used in illegal animal shoes, reported by China Daily.
