This morning Beijing municipal authorities announced that the city is extending its ban on outdoor barbeques from the center of the city outward to the Beijing suburbs. Beijing has banned restaurants from cooking outdoor barbecues inside the fourth ring road and now it is including suburban districts. This will make those trying to eat cheap street food travel even further than before.
Ultimately the reason for the BBQ ban is to cut down on air pollution. As CRI cogently puts it: “Barbecuing is believed to emit a lot of PM2.5, harmful airborne particles measuring less than 2.5 microns in diameter.”
Many people are frustrated with the ban saying that there are other methods to help with the pollution problem that won’t hurt the street vendors. Let’s hope that things get resolved in a safe matter.
